Browsing through data

This part of the user interface shows a tree representing the file systems available for backup. It can be the local file system, a network share or a VMWare hypervisor.

Each element of this tree, called a node, can be a group of other elements (Data to backup, machine, disks, directory or even a single file). For instance, a disk is a node including a set of files and directories.

When a node contains other elements, you can expand it to reveal them or collapse it back.

Adding data

To add data in the backup selection, you will need to click on the check box located on the left of the node. The selected data will be included to the global selection.

Once you are done selecting data, click on "Save changes to this selection". It allows you to validate your selection and to save it in the configuration file.

Exluding data

Once you have selected a node, you can choose to exclude some specific elements descending from it.

For instance, you can select a whole user profile and exclude its download folder. You can also select a folder and exclude some specific files.

To exclude data from a node, expand its data tree and uncheck the nodes you don't wish to backup.

Change a node's properties

Click on the gear located next to a node to inspect its properties, as follows:

With the inspector, you will be able to change :

When some properties are not empty, the corresponding icons are displayed next to the node's name, on its right.

Every nodes inherit the properties from their parent nodes. If you need to apply different properties to node than to its parents, you will have to uncheck the inheritance check box accordingly.

Inclusion and exclusion filters

Once the base selection has been done, you can refine your selection by using a system of inclusion and exclusion filters :

Those filters are a very powerful tool to refine your selection. The exclusion filters allows you to forbid backing up the unwanted file types. On another hand, the inclusion filters will allow you to only select the specified file types.

To work with mmultiple file types, you need to specify one file extension per line in the according field within the filters zone.

If you wish, for instance, to exclude music files, you will need to specify : .mp3, .aac, *.ogg etc...

If instead you need to backup files created with Microsoft Word, you can specify : .dot, .doc, *.docx etc... like shown below :

Inclusion filters

Caution ! Be very careful when using inclusion filters. They allow you to restrict the file types to be backed up, excluding thereby all other file types.

Data retention

Retention allows you to decide the aging management of your backup data. It is up to you to modify the settings to decide how to space the versions gradually over time or how long you want to keep your backups.

The retention setting acts as a system of successive filters. Each new rule aims to increase the interval between two versions of your data from a given point in time.

Generally, the last rule is an end of retention rule.

By default, your data history is retained for 30 days. This means that only an end-of-retention rule is defined after 30 days of history.

To add a new rule, simply click the + button to the right of the rule before placing the new rule.

You must then specify the time positioning of the rule (x days / weeks after saving) and the time interval between versions (x hours / days / weeks).

The intervals of the different versions must necessarily be multiples of each other.

When several versions exist on an interval, the oldest one is preserved.

If a file has not been modified, it will not generate a new version.

The use of the last rule is not compulsory and you can choose to keep your data indefinitely (subject to respect of the allocated space).

Caution ! As a safety measure, the "last rule", which represents the removal of old versions, is only applied when a modified version of your data exists. A modified version can be a new version of a file, an evolution or a deleted version.

For instance, you wish to keep your data history for one week and delete any version older than one week.


To select data stored within a network share, add the sharing machine to the ressources list.

To do so, type its name or IP address in the according field, under the selection zone.

Adding a server

Once the server added in the ressources list, click on its name to bring the properties panel up.

In the security properties, fill the form with credentials allowed to access to the network share.

Once the credentials saved, a key icon, representing the security properties, will appear next the machine name or address.

This procedure is identical for a network share or a VMWare hypervisor. There are some specific prerequisite to backup VMWare infrastructures as described in this procedure :
